Registering a new account on the site does take a little longer than on many dating platforms. You need to start with a personality test as well as your personal details.
Some options make it a bit easier, though:
- Rather than uploading a profile photo, you can import images from Facebook or Instagram.
- Once you've registered, you get immediate match suggestions.
- You can skip many fields, aside from a name, email address, date of birth, and location.
From there, it's up to you how much detail you want to give. There are endless questions about everything from religion to sexuality, aspirations to hobbies, and the more you answer, the more accurate your recommended dates are.
Profile Creation
The OKCupid.com idea is that your personality matters as much in compatibility as appearance. The profiles are all about personal characteristics.
Each suggestion is based on eligibility established by an algorithm, so it works better the more data it has to work on. If you haven't got time to complete everything, you can return later.
Your account will show a match percentage on a wheel, so you can see how likely the app thinks you will be to want to get to know each other!
Matchmaking
As we've discovered, OkCupid does pretty much all the searching for you, so you don't need to search for compatible likes manually.
However, you can choose to filter your matches to display only people who are online now - although you can't pick and choose who will be selected by the algorithm as a potential match for you.
If you find your matches aren't great, it's best to answer more sections on the personality test to improve your recommendations.
Contact Other Users
You can't message any profile on OkCupid - you need to wait for a mutual like through the roulette-matching wheel before you can start chatting.
While this change was intended to reduce unwanted messaging, it does mean that you're somewhat discouraged from starting conversations unless you already have a mutual match.
As a free account user, you can send Flirtcasts (although limited), and view messages in the public chat rooms. You can't however send direct chat requests.
